Dear Frustrated Entrepreneur

Dear Frustrated Entrepreneur

Dear Frustrated Entrepreneur – A year ago today, I was on a flight to Los Angeles (as I am now writing this) but my situation was much different. 12 months ago I was a recent business guy turned matchmaker. Many of my friends and former business partners laughed, mocked, and more damaging to me personally, doubted me. I recall a family friend visiting me at my house and saying “look, you have a son now, stop playing around and get a REAL career.”

I didn’t have much to respond with – revenue was coming in but nowhere near what I made in my previous job.  Competitors were popping up daily, and my current marketing efforts weren’t stellar (I was a social media layman having just joined twitter). All that said, although the world felt like it was against me, there was this voice in my mind telling me to keep trying.

But I couldn’t explain that to my friend. If on top of all his disappointment I told him I had a little voice in my head, he would have strapped me down and taken me off for a psychiatric evaluation.

A year later (today) I’m flying to Los Angeles to do the The Talk. It’ll be my second appearance on the show and my 14th national TV appearance within a year. Within the last year, I starred alongside Oprah in what has become an award winning TV show. Within the last year, I published a book that became an Amazon bestseller within 4 days. Within the last year, I more than quadrupled my earnings. What a difference a year can make!

So if you’re frustrated, if your friends and family doubt you, if you’re not making enough money to justify staying in business, if you have no idea why you’re listening to that one little voice telling you to keep going. I ask you to keep listening – that’s faith talking to you.

I needed that. This journey is not easy but as long as I stay focused on my “why” I can make it. You are so right that a year can make a difference. Congrats to you in all that you have and will accomplish.

Thank you for this Paul, I am a domestic abuse survivor and now my goal is to empower women, be a motivational speaker and an Author. Family & friends don’t understand my dream, but my spirit keeps telling me to keep on pushing. This is very encouraging for me. Thank u.

This was timed perfectly. I’m on month 4 and bringing in income but nothing near what I’m comfortable with, and although the naysayers are plenty, the voice in my head won’t quit. It keeps saying, “Stay focused, work the plan, don’t quit, you can do this, keep going…all the way to the top.” Thx for reminding me that I’m still sane. 🙂

this post (article) is so amazing and right on time! only God knows how many looks of disappointment and uncertainty i’ve gotten from family and friends…especially when i decided to pack up things and move to south korea to live and teach…talk about a leap of faith! but since then, i’ve started writing a book about my experience and my blogs have been more inspiring! 🙂

Thank you for this! I left a so-called stellar career as a legal assistant to go out on my own and open a desserts cafe! I’m sitting in my office, right now, as my ovens are being delivered! Without great risk, there is no great reward! Thank you for the encouragement! 🙂

This post is very inspirational. Although I am still working the same job that I have been in corporate America for the past 15 years, the frustration of wanting to branch out on my own has caused me to put more energy into my non-profit consulting firm. The days have been hard and sometimes my phones are silent. Here’s the good news, I have just been given the opportunity to present my company to two NBA players and a major artist in the rap industry to head off their foundations. I want to play with the big boys and by… Read more »

I read this post at just the right time. As I’m hustling to raise the $10,000 I need for my Kickstarter campaign, I have a lot of ups and downs and sometimes wonder why I’m doing all of it. The small voice inside still urges me on but it can also get drowned out by my worrying and exasperated voice. Thanks for the encouragement and glimpse into your journey!

Paul, as usual you’ve nailed this topic. We have to bring back the #MDMQ on twitter. Keep up the good work. I know the pain of career changes. You learn very quickly who your “friends” are.

I’m struggling in a similar situation as this one and this has inspired me to listen to that little voice in my head not to give up. Thank for this article it has given me a lot of insight and now I can see things from a different perspective. Thank you.

.Thank you so much! Everyone needs encouragment but those who strike out on their own are in constant need to keep moving forward.

CHANGE A LIFE! My first novel is also for sale on Amazon.com. Love and Lies in the River City is a dramatic romance with Black characters that are accesible and not “gangsta”. It’s a great new read and you’ll love it if you give it a chance. Please everyone check it out and contact me. http://www.defieldsbooks.wix.com/loveandlies.

wow!!! how did I find this today; perfect timing. I am so far deep under water financially. My logical mind is telling me to get a job but my inner voice says keep doing what I love since I have a few things lined up that will generate more than sufficient income. Today may seem bleek but I feel like I could reach out and touch my success the way I am close to my breakthrough. I’m REALLY relying on faith

So glad I read this today of all days!! The first few years of entrepreneurship are harder than anyone tells you they will be. It’s about believing in yourself when very few people believe in you.

Thank you for writing this!

This is JUST what I needed!! I’m in tht place RIGHT NOW!! SAME scenario exactly. Ive decided to leave nursing school and make Natural Hair Styling my primary career as of March 1 of this year. My mother is not happy, excited, or even supportive of what I know to be my passion. She feels like b/c I have a daughter, she needs to be taken care of w/ me having a steady income and I totally get it, but this is what I want to do and I’m confident that God has placed me here.

Thank you for your miracle Doctor Osemu Okpamen This article is dedicated to the Doctor Osemu Okpamen. I have been married with my wife for 5 years and recently she broke up with me and it hurt me deeply when she told me to leave her alone and that she does not love me anymore when i was always faithful and honest to her. I tried all the ways to get her back buying her what she wants like i always did and she still left me heart broken and she even has a new boyfriend which destroyed me even… Read more »

Hello,I Read the article of a very great spell caster and it seems very helpful to me. I haven’t had the chance to have a proper relationship with my ex because we work together. This will be the final week or work and then I wont be around him constantly. Unfortunately, I broke one of the rules in the article and have been sleeping with him. Something I’m not proud of, especially since he has a girlfriend. Not to mention that she’s a girl he dated off and on for 3 years before he dated me.When I asked him why… Read more »
