#MentorMonday [Recap] – 3 Surefire Ways Eric Thomas Inspires: Service, Secrets, and Saying “NO”

For this edition of #MentorMonday, Paul hosted from New York City, instead of his usual DC location, because he and his beautiful wife, Jill were celebrating a very special day. Happy 13th Wedding Anniversary to Paul and Jill Brunson!

And, a very special thank you to Lamar Tyler, of BlackAndMarriedWithKids.com for stepping in to continue the interview after Paul experienced technical difficulties. Lamar did an amazing job…Paul, don’t slip…ut oh!

Motivation, inspiration, and tools for success are all embodied in the incredible 20 plus year career of world renowned speaker, educator, author, activist and minister, Eric Thomas. ET, as he’s known, shared life lessons with the #MentorMonday community this week.

To punctuate the breadth and depth of the work he has done with youth, and the lasting impact he’s had on the lives he has touched, this #MentorMonday episode opened with an on-air heartfelt thank you from #MM community member and intern extraordinaire, Kenyatte of Texas.

That thank you set off the theme of how Eric Thomas has not only touched so many lives, but how, from leaving home at 16 through inspiring millions today, his walk has been influenced by someone seeing in him what he could be and how that fuels how he pays it forward.

ET came ready with answers to our questions, but more importantly he came with questions FOR us to answer! And straight out of the gate he asked us honestly, “Are you taking advantage of the opportunities around you?”

By way of example he took us through his own journey of leaving home at 16.  After receiving mentorship and encouragement from a local pastor, he earned his GED and he entered college where the motto was, “Enter to learn, depart to serve.” The lasting impact that spirit of service has remained with him as a man and upon his ministry.

Serve first, speak second

Many of us have known ET as a gifted motivational speaker, however, he shared what he believes to be his true gift, and it’s not what you think. He also shared how we can use our own unique gifts to serve. Because as he said, in the words of John C. Maxwell, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Do you have a vision to impact those around you? From family members to strangers, this #MentorMonday session is chock full of concrete tools for us to implement in our own work and lives, as well as ET’s answers to questions such as:

  • The “secret sauce” to how he connects with his audience.
  • How he picks the right team and has the right people around him.
  • The best advice he ever received.
  • The importance of knowing how to say, ‘no’ and not being a people-pleaser.
  • Knowing when to say, ‘yes’.
  • Knowing your worth and how to value yourself (see his powerful video #YouMatter)

How to Be Successful is NO Secret

ET shared freely with us the importance of having a daily routine—and what his own routine is. Did he say he wakes up at 3am daily? As he asked in his viral video The Secret of Success, the answer of course is, ‘How badly do you want it?’

ET got real about the importance of family, fellowship and accountability.  Quoting the title of a popular Denzel Washington movie about success he says, it’s an inside job: If you’re going to be good at what you do you have to start on the inside. He says, “A lot of us are trying to blow up on the outside, but if my wife [and children] say I am who I say I am, I know I’ll be able to impress the world.”

Just Say ‘No’ and ‘Yes’

As his business has grown, he finds he does less, makes more and is home more with his family…and his school books. That’s right.  He’s working on his dissertation for his Ph.D.!

“There are only 24 hours in a day, you can’t buy more, you can’t save some from the day before. You have to manage your time. You only have a certain amount of time for other people,” says the hip-hop preacher, ET.

Ouch, he gave us a serious gut check about how we can best serve our family and those around us, without compromising our own goals and vision. One question: “Are you trying to be everyone’s savior and hero?” If your answer is yes, then he recommends that you, “find your own source and help them find theirs.”

Awwww yeah, time for prizes!!!!! ET gave away ETInspires T-shirts, books and more! There were four lucky #MentorMonday winners.  Congrats!

Every #MentorMonday session brings humor and wit, and most importantly life lessons that can be implemented immediately. This session is no different. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Again, a special shout out to Lamar Tyler for stepping in. It hasn’t been confirmed but there’s a rumor that the technology gods decided Paul needed to focus on his 13th wedding anniversary celebrations with his amazing wife, Jill! That’s something that the founder of BlackandMarriedWithKids.com and ET, both husbands to amazing wives, totally understood!
